Course site - the individual Blackboard site allocated to each SI-net course

ECP – Electronic Course Profile

SI-net course - any course offered at the University of Queensland into which a student enrols via SI-net

3. Procedures Scope/Coverage

This procedure applies to course instructors or delegated administrators who are responsible within their school for administration of Blackboard course sites.  It outlines the requirements for obtaining access to the course site, and preparing the course site for teaching activities.

4. Procedures Statement

Course sites are automatically created in Blackboard at the start of each semester.  Students are pre-enrolled based on SI-net data.  When the ECP for each SI-net course is completed and published, the Blackboard course site is created automatically, and the course instructor named in the ECP is emailed notification of the created Blackboard course site.  Course instructors must then add course materials to the course site, and make the site available to students prior to start of the teaching period.

Students cannot request an Blackboard course site to be created.

To gain access to the relevant Blackboard site, course instructors may choose to use the automatic or manual procedures, depending on their requirements.

4.1 Automatic course creation process

  1. Course instructor completes the electronic course profile for each SI-Net course.

  2. Once the ECP for a course is published, the instructor is assigned to the corresponding Blackboard course automatically for year 1-6 courses.

  3. An automated-email is sent advising the instructor that their site is available for them to access, with instructions on steps to be taken to prepare course for student access.

4.2 Manual process

Course instructors may choose to  request a course-creation before it is automatically triggered with the ECP publication. The following process applies:

  1. Log in to Blackboard, and access the staff tab.

  2. Under “eLearning Tools”, select “Course/Community Site Request Forms”, and select “new site”.

  3. Follow the online instructions to complete the relevant information.
